The second order of business was hooking up more reliable internet in El Chapo’s mountain hideouts. On Christian’s orders, El Chapo’s in-house IT man—a guy named El Gordo, or Fatty—set up a series of antennas to provide a better phone signal, and ran an internet cable as far out of Culiacán as they could, which, when relayed from antenna to antenna, allowed El Chapo and his men to access the Web without having to worry about inchworm speeds and service outages.

Within months, dozens of El Chapo’s associates, family members, and underlings were chatting away on talk and text using the extension phones, allowing a new level of speedy communication that gave El Chapo instant access to all manner of associates across the globe without leaving his hideouts in the mountains. This was great for El Chapo, but was becoming a lot for the young Colombian hacker to manage, and his workload seemed to grow by the day. In addition to running comms for the Cifuentes family and looking after his legitimate business, he was now traveling to Sinaloa every other month in order to meet with El Chapo and help the boss’s lieutenants set up new extensions and understand the software. Sometimes that meant sitting in an armored car on the outskirts of Culiacán, walking high-ranking traffickers through the finer points of end-to-end encryption, a grim parody of a normal IT worker’s day-to-day work.

His headache was about to get worse. On one of Christian’s routine trips to the mountains, after the usual hair-raising Cessna flight to a makeshift mountaintop airstrip, El Chapo had a new question: What did Christian know about spyware?
